A luxury hotel in the Cuban capital, Havana, has been hit by a deadly explosion. At least 18 people were killed and dozens injured. It is suspected that the gas leak may have been the cause.

The death toll from a bomb blast at a luxury hotel in the Cuban capital, Havana, has risen to 22. The Socialist Caribbean presidency announced on Twitter that they had a pregnant woman and a baby. Sixty-four people, including 14 minors, were hospitalized for treatment.

President Miguel Diaz-Connell initially rejected an assassination attempt. “Early findings indicate that the explosion was triggered by a gas leak,” the president’s office said in another post on Twitter.

The Cuban Communist Party’s newspaper “Granma” reported that liquid gas had been supplied to the hotel at the time of the explosion. Pictures show a tank truck being pulled out of the rubble. The well-known five-star hotel a few steps away from the Capitol has been closed for about two years due to a corona virus infection. Will be reopening next Tuesday.

The home completely collapsed

The bomber struck shortly after 11:00 a.m. local time. Much of the faade of Hotel Saratoga was destroyed. Debris and glass shattered throughout the area. Smoke and dust rose from the top of the building. Also, several vehicles were damaged. The hotel is undergoing renovations, according to AFP.

Hotel Saradoga has 96 rooms, two restaurants and a rooftop pool. Stars like Madonna and Beyonc have been staying there in recent years.
