Common and Patti LaBelle Take a New Stand: NPR

Patti LaBelle and Common provide the soundtrack to the second night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention with performances that span generations and genres.

The South Side rapper electrified the second-night crowd at the convention center, performing his 2024 song “Fortunate,” which he adapted to include a message about Vice President Kamala Harris, with vocals by singer Jonathan McReynolds. “I thank God for this moment when Kamala Harris will change the world for the better with love, hope and grace,” the rapper and activist said.

Patti LaBelle also took the stage to perform, receiving a standing ovation from the audience. The living legend brought the audience to their feet as she sang the lyrics, reminding fans why she is often referred to as the “Godmother of Soul” by contemporaries and critics.
