Santa Clara — Running back Christian McCaffrey 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that he is dealing with issues with the Achilles tendons in his legs.

McCaffrey recently traveled to Germany to receive treatment for bilateral Achilles tendonitis.

“During that time, he injured both (Achilles tendons),” Shanahan said in a conference call with reporters. “I think it starts in one, (then) you overcompensate in the other. Basically, one was bothering him, but he had it in both.

McCaffrey returned to practice one month later as the 49ers began preparations to face the New York Jets in the season opener.

However, McCaffrey was declared inactive for the first regular season game. Conditions worsened the following week as he continued to train.

The 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve on the eve of the team’s Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

He is not eligible to return to action until after the 49ers’ next game against the Arizona Cardinals. But there’s no telling when McCaffrey will be able to return to the field.

Shanahan indicated last week that the 49ers believe they can begin more intense practices this week.

McCaffrey is coming off a season in which he was named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Week and finished third in MVP voting after rushing for 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns last season while catching 67 passes for 564 yards and seven touchdowns.
