“It was a surprise, but to me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin very much. I always expected that we would have a family together one day. This will be much sooner than I expected,” Spears wrote about the pregnancy in the book. “But Justin certainly wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we were not ready to have a child in our lives, that we were too young.”
A rep for Timberlake did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
“If he had left it to me alone, I would never have done it,” she wrote in the book. “And yet, Justin was pretty sure he didn’t want to be a father.”
“To this day, it’s one of the most painful things I’ve ever gone through in my life,” Spears wrote of her miscarriage experience.
After Spears and Timberlake split in 2002, she became a mother, having two sons — Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17 — with her second husband, Kevin Federline.
Spears will release her long-awaited memoir on October 24 through Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
