Russian President Putin officially opened the BRICS summit. According to him, the “multipolar world order” desired by the group is emerging. Apart from several heads of state, the UN Secretary General Guterres was also present.

Leaders of the BRICS group held their first meeting at the summit. Russian President and host Vladimir Putin spoke to attendees about what he saw as an emerging “multipolar world order.”

At the official opening of the meeting in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russian Republic, Putin said, “The process of creating a multilateral world order is underway, which is a dynamic and irreversible process. The BRICS strategy is in line with the aspirations of the largest part of the global community, the so-called global majority.”

Putin said that more than 30 countries want to join the alliance. “It would be undoubtedly wrong to ignore the unprecedented interest of the global South and East in strengthening ties with the BRICS,” the Kremlin leader said, but expansion should not come at the expense of the alliance’s effectiveness. A total of 36 countries are participating in the three-day meeting in Kazan.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa added that the BRICS group of emerging economies has a key role to play in building a new multilateral world order. The summit is an opportunity to build a just world.

Putin will meet Guterres on Thursday

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also arrived in the morning. According to Russian sources, Putin and Guterres will meet on Thursday. This will be the first meeting between the two since April 2022. In late February 2022, Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine. According to the UN, Guterres will meet with a “large number” of high-level participants at the summit amid growing international concern over conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Ukraine strongly criticized Guterres’ trip to the summit. Guterres rejected Ukraine’s invitation to a peace conference in Switzerland, but accepted war criminal Putin’s invitation to Kazan. This was said to be wrong and tarnished the reputation of the United Nations.

G, Modi, Ramaphosa are also there

A number of heads of state from BRICS countries have already arrived for Tuesday’s summit, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. According to the Kremlin, more than 20 countries will be represented by their heads of state.

BRICS was created to reduce the dominance of the West in world affairs. For more than a decade, the confederation consisted of five states: in addition to Russia, there were Brazil, India, China and South Africa. The name also goes to these members.

Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia recently joined. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied for membership, and many other states have expressed interest in joining.
