Breakthrough in reach: Nuclear deal with Iran almost ready to be signed

Breakthrough within reach
The nuclear deal with Iran is almost ready to be signed

It is currently difficult to find an international round in which Russia will still participate. One of them is the nuclear talks with Iran. Now it seems that a turning point is emerging. The deal could be signed over the weekend.

According to London, an agreement has been reached in the Vienna talks on the Iranian nuclear program. “We are getting closer,” British Ambassador Stephanie Al-Gock wrote on Twitter. European negotiators will now briefly leave Vienna and explain to their respective governments.

In talks to renew the international nuclear deal with Iran in Vienna, both sides have recently made progress. Germany, France, Great Britain and China are in talks with Iran. Russia is still there. The United States is indirectly involved.

In 2018, under then-President Donald Trump, the United States withdrew from the agreement and re-established its sanctions. Tehran then gradually withdrew from the deal and intensified its nuclear program. Under new US President Joe Biden, talks on a new deal have resumed.

Crossey travels to Tehran

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Croce,’s desire to travel to Tehran on Saturday for a meeting with top Iranian representatives is seen as a sign of a possible immediate deal. For his part, Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir-Abdullah announced that he was ready to travel to Vienna for talks if the deal was announced. To do this, however, is to accept the remaining “red lines” in Tehran on the other hand.

Top officials are no longer coming to Vienna, but if they are really foreign ministers, it will be a signal for possible progress. However, the EU’s chief negotiator, Enrique Mora, recently warned against overconfidence. The draft resolution seeks to lift US sanctions against Tehran and prevent Iran’s nuclear program from re-developing nuclear weapons.
