Beirbach demands more pressure on Tehran

Two more protesters were hanged in Iran. Iran’s judicial authority announced on Saturday that Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Sejed Mohammad Hosseini. He was hanged early in the morning. Union Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbach responded on Twitter, writing that the two men were executed by the regime because they did not want to submit to brutal and inhumane treatment. They are “two more terrible provisions that will encourage us to increase the pressure on Tehran with the European Union.”

Under the tweet, users called on the green politician to take action. “Finally put the (Revolutionary Guards) on the terrorist list!” wrote activist Daniela Sebehri, for example. Activist and podcaster Sahar Esla asked, “Happy that it took two more executions for you to do right?”

Three others were sentenced to death

On the regime-controlled Judiciary’s online portal Mizan, Karami and Hosseini were blamed for the death of a so-called security officer during system-criticism protests in November. According to the Iran Human Rights Organization, they are said to be 22 and 39 years old. The executions brought to four the number of protesters who have been officially hanged over the course of more than three months of mass-organizational protests.

Three others were sentenced to death for the death of Adjamian, a member of the Basij militia. Eleven convicts were sentenced to prison terms. The Basij Militia is a paramilitary volunteer unit linked to the powerful Revolutionary Guards. It plays an important role in the massive crackdown on protesters.

Two people have already been hanged

Amid nationwide protests, rappers Mohsen Shekhari and Majid-Reza Rahnavard were hanged in December for the murder and attempted murder of two Basij members. The execution caused a stir both at home and abroad. The European Union decided to impose further sanctions against Iran due to severe human rights violations.

According to experts, the sanctions have exacerbated an already severe economic crisis. The national currency, the rial, lost more than 25 percent of its value after the protests. Looking at the developments in the country, there is no end to the financial crisis. Some observers even fear economic collapse in the oil-rich nation.

Harana: More than 500 people died in the protests

However, according to the US-based organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the number of executions could be significantly higher. By 2022, only one-third of the Islamic regime’s executions had been officially announced.

According to the organization, more than 500 people, including 70 minors and nearly 70 policemen and security forces, have already died in the protests. More than 19,000 demonstrators were arrested.
