A 39-year-old woman was killed by a great white shark in a tourist town about 300 kilometers from Cape Town on Sunday morning. It was the second death this year and the third such attack in the past 11 years, local media reported.

According to the “Sun” report, a great white shark allegedly swam towards the victim with a wave from deep water, bit the woman and then dived. An eyewitness told the newspaper: “I heard screams and suddenly everyone came out of the water.” Rescuers rushed out, but any help came too late. The dead body of the woman was found floating 50 meters from the sea by a sea rescue vessel and brought to the beach. The woman’s partner and her young daughter were unharmed and receiving psychological treatment. The family is from Cape Town and was in Plettenberg Bay for the weekend, according to reports.

Officials have been warning of an increase in shark activity in the area for weeks. Earlier this month, authorities identified a dead humpback whale that had been eaten by sharks. In early May, local authorities approved the construction of a shark barrier at the site, the Sunday Times reported.
