Your support helps us tell the story.
My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how important independent journalism is in giving a voice to underrepresented communities.
Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, and bring attention to issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.
Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run-up to and beyond the election.

Divers searching for British tech mogul Mike Lynch’s sunken yacht off Sicily have found safes containing potentially sensitive intelligence data, sources have claimed.
Local law enforcement authorities now reportedly fear that foreign governments such as China and Russia could become interested in the boat — and have requested additional surveillance to protect it, CNN reported.
Through his companies, Lynch has been linked to multiple intelligence services – including British and American – particularly through his cybersecurity company, Darktrace.
The Bayesian boat is believed to contain watertight lockers with two highly encrypted hard drives containing classified intelligence information, an official with the recovery team told the newspaper.
The wreckage of the ship, which lies at a depth of 50 metres, is expected to be recovered in the coming weeks as part of a criminal investigation into its sinking on August 19.
“A formal request has been accepted and implemented to provide additional security for the wreckage until it can be removed,” Francesco Venuto, of the Sicilian Civil Protection Agency, told CNN.
Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among eight people killed when the yacht sank last month.
Bayzi’s yacht may contain lockers containing classified intelligence data, sources say
Divers requested heightened security measures after finding sealed cabinets that may contain highly classified information, sources told CNN.
Authorities have said they are seeking to beef up security measures, with sources suggesting that classified intelligence on the boat could be of interest to Russia and China.
An official working with the boat’s rescue team said the ship is believed to contain watertight lockers with two highly encrypted hard drives, CNN reported.
“A formal request has been accepted and implemented to provide additional security for the wreckage until it can be removed,” Francesco Venuto of the Sicilian Civil Protection Agency told CNN.

Bayezis team leader said to be ‘living the darkest days of his life’
Three crew members, including the yacht’s captain, are being investigated, with plans under discussion to raise the yacht from the ocean floor to aid the investigation.
Among those killed were Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who was due to start studying at Oxford University in September, the yacht’s head chef and four other family friends and colleagues.

Mike Lynch had connections to spy chiefs and intelligence agencies.
Secret intelligence has emerged indicating that information may be located 50 metres below the Bayesian yacht.
British tech mogul Mike Lynch, who died in the sunken yacht, was known to have ties to intelligence services around the world, including the British and American.
The link came in part from his cybersecurity company Darktrace, which he founded in 2011 in partnership with former British intelligence officials, Politico reported.
Co-founder Stephen Hoxter, who previously held a senior position in MI5’s cyber defense team, has become the company’s managing director.
Darktrace is used to combat cyber attacks, by identifying behavioral patterns of actors in an organization and detecting any unusual activity.
Former MI6 chief Jonathan Evans sat on the company’s board, and Jim Penrose, who had worked at the US National Security Agency, led the company’s US operations.
A number of other intelligence figures were also involved with Darktrace.
Lynch also had other spy-related projects. British intelligence contracted Cambridge Neurodynamics, a company that specializes in fingerprint recognition for computers.

All surviving crew members suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder from the sinking, former captain says
The former captain of the Bayezid yacht said he spoke to all the surviving crew members to hear their accounts of the sinking.
Stephen Edwards said all the crew on deck saved as many passengers as possible, but going down into the flooded lower parts of the yacht “would have meant certain death”.
“They’re not working well,” the former commander told The Telegraph.
“The overwhelming feeling is still one of shock from this event. They are dealing with what happened, how it happened, and how quickly it happened.”

Four victims found with carbon dioxide in the lungs
Tech billionaire Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and five others died when the plane crashed into a storm that resembled a mini-tornado.
Chef Ricaldo Thomas, Jonathan Plummer, president of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer for Clifford Chance, and his wife Nida, were the other victims of the August 19 tragedy.
Four of the victims are feared to have suffocated to death in carbon dioxide-filled air bubbles, according to their autopsies, raising the frightening possibility that they may have been conscious after the yacht sank, according to Italian news agency La Repubblica.
Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife Angela Pakaris, survived when they were rescued by a nearby yacht.

Deadly waterspouts believed to have caused Sicily boat tragedy
In Italy, hydrocyclones can produce winds of up to 200 kilometres (124 miles) per hour, while cyclones can produce wind gusts of around 150 kilometres per hour.
Statistics show that snowstorms are becoming more frequent across the country, which Mercalli said may be linked to global warming.
Storms and heavy rain have swept across Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat.
“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), which is about 3 degrees above normal. This creates a huge source of energy that contributes to these storms,” said Italian climate scientist Luca Mercale.
“So we can’t say it’s all due to climate change, but we can say it has an amplifying effect.”
A similar storm killed four people when their tourist boat sank on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy in May last year.
The country’s geological diversity makes it vulnerable to floods and landslides, while the fact that it is surrounded by rapidly warming seas means it is increasingly vulnerable to powerful storms.

Superyacht restoration work begins on 200m red zone off Porticello
TMC Marine, a company specialising in “planning and executing high-risk maritime operations and investigating and resolving serious maritime incidents and disputes”, has arrived in Porticello.
The delicate operation could cost up to £15m to lift the Baysail and will require boats equipped with cranes, with locals complaining of the impact.
“When will the recovery process be carried out?” one of the fishermen asked the workers, according to The Republic.
Another added: “For us, it is better for these operations to end as soon as possible.”
He pointed to a 200-metre radius area where sailing is still prohibited and under constant surveillance by the Coast Guard.
“The community is getting ready to celebrate the Madonna del Lume,” added a worker at a nearby bar, referring to the upcoming October holiday.
“On that day, the image of the Virgin Mary, the symbol of the village, will be taken out of the church and passed through the hands of the faithful, after which hundreds of boats will set out to sea.”

Mike Lynch’s co-accused died from head injuries after being hit by a car days before the yacht sank.
Investigations revealed that Stephen Chamberlain, Mike Lynch’s co-defendant, died in hospital three days after being hit by a car on a country road.
Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Mike Lynch’s software company Autonomy, was jogging outside the house at the time, his attorney Gary Linsenberg said.
Coroner Caroline Jones told the inquest at Alconbury that the medical cause of death was recorded as “head injury”.
