Former US President Barack Obama seems to have expressed doubts to other Democrats in recent days about whether Joe Biden can win the US presidential election in November. as The Washington Post Obama said Biden should “seriously consider the possibility of his candidacy.” Biden served as Vice President in the Obama administration from 2008 to 2016.

According to the newspaper, Obama reportedly spoke behind the scenes on the phone with countless Democrats who were skeptical of Biden’s candidacy. Among them is prominent politician Nancy Pelosi.

Obama worried about Biden’s poll numbers

Obama also expressed concern about Biden’s polls in the debates. While Republican Donald Trump is increasingly winning over voters, things look dire for Biden. Obama is also concerned about donors going to the campaign trail.

Many Democrats in Congress have already withdrawn their support for Joe Biden. In an op-ed in the New York Times last week, Hollywood actor George Clooney called for Biden to drop out of the race. Clooney was considered a major donor to Biden’s campaign.

Pressure on the President is mounting. He reportedly met with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently. Both warned Biden that his candidacy would hurt Democrats’ chances in the November election.

On the other hand, the current US president is adamant: during his election campaign last week, Biden insisted that he did not want to withdraw from running for re-election. “We have to finish this job,” he told supporters in the small town of Northville, Michigan. “I promise I’m fine.” (with AFP)
