Post-rape murders make headlines again in India: Several arrested in northern state of Uttar Pradesh Again the victims belong to the lowest strata of the caste system.

Indian police arrested six people on charges of gang rape and murder. The accused are said to be responsible for the death of the two sisters.

Sanjeev Suman, a police inspector in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, said two men had confessed to raping and strangling the 15- and 17-year-old sisters. They then asked two other suspects to help them dispose of the bodies.

Suman did not say what the other suspects are accused of. As the bodies of the dead were hanging from the tree, the criminals tried to commit suicide.

Especially those belonging to the Dalit community are usually affected

Girls belong to the Dalit community, the lowest rung in the Hindu caste system. Dalits are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence. The accused belong to Hindu and Muslim communities.

Many people protested against the violence. They demanded severe punishment for the culprits.

32,000 rapes were reported in India in 2021 alone. Presumably, many cases are not included in the statistics. In 2012, a case in which a 23-year-old was brutally raped and murdered by several men on a bus made headlines around the world.
