After Hurricane “Ian”: All of Cuba without power

A category four hurricane is moving through the Gulf of Mexico. He wreaked havoc in Cuba. The US state of Florida is preparing for a severe storm attack.

Hurricane Ian caused power outages across Cuba. This was announced by energy supplier Union Electrica. Power restoration work is underway.

The hurricane hit Cuba’s west coast early Tuesday morning, causing heavy damage there. First there were power outages in the western provinces, and then the power grid collapsed across the country.

Two people are reported to have died

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated to safer places in Cuba. In the province of Pinar del Rio, 40,000 people have evacuated their homes as a precaution. The nearby towns of Artemis and Havana also suffered heavy damage. Houses were damaged due to floods. The Cuban government says two people have died after their houses collapsed.

According to officials, they are still verifying the extent of the destruction. According to state media, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel visited the worst-hit area.

A storm surge is possible in Florida

In this case, the US state of Florida is preparing to face the hurricane. “Forecasts are subject to change, but experts now say this could be a very severe hurricane, with life-threatening and catastrophic consequences,” US President Joe Biden said.

The U.S. Hurricane Center has warned of life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds along Florida’s west coast. There were evacuation orders for 2.5 million people.

Cyclone may strengthen

Meteorologists warn that the hurricane, currently classified as the fourth of five hurricanes, will strengthen in the warmer part of the Gulf of Mexico. It can produce winds of over 200 kilometers per hour.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the hurricane is expected to weaken before making landfall south of Tampa. But coastal areas will have more rain because the cyclone will then move at a “snail’s pace”. DeSantis called on people to protect themselves.
