A zookeeper was killed by a lion while taking people to see him feed him after his wildlife park was closed, according to officials.

Babaji Dole, a 35-year-old black trainer, was bitten in the neck on Saturday after agreeing to take guests into the cage despite their arrival hours later at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park in Nigeria, park management said. He told Daily Post Nigeria.

“The zookeeper appeared to feel comfortable with the animal, left the safety gate open and proceeded to feed the animal,” the department said.

“It is important to note that this activity falls completely outside the scope of the park’s standard feeding routine,” the wildlife park stressed in its statement.

It was not immediately clear whether Dole had permission to take guests into the lockdown area when it was supposed to be closed.

In both cases, he “carelessly neglected to secure the locks and barricade the lion’s enclosure before approaching the cage to feed the animal,” police spokesman Omolola Odutola said in a statement.
