But a store employee arrested him in December and called the police as the store manager tried to leave.
A high school principal in Japan was fired from his job on Tuesday after he was caught handing out more coffee than he paid for at a convenience store, local media reported.
The 59-year-old, who was not named, told police in the city of Takasago that he would pour himself a large amount of coffee during his lunch breaks even though he had paid for the regular option. Local channel Yomiuri TV reported.
He realized during his lunch break in June that store employees hadn't noticed when he dispensed a $1.25 coffee at a self-serve machine while paying for a $0.75 cup, the outlet reported, citing the Hyogo Prefecture Board of Education.
The manager said he poured himself more coffee seven times over the course of the year until he was arrested in December by a store employee, who called the police, according to Yomiuri TV.
The large coffee led to the principal's disciplinary dismissal, the education board said on Yomiuri TV.
He apologized to the students and their families in a statement through the council, saying that his role is to lead by example and encourage discipline. Each regional outlet has a Kobe Shimbun.
The Kobe Shimbun reported that local prosecutors decided not to press charges against the director.
This is not the first time Japan has caught convenience store customers trying to get more coffee.
In January 2021, police in Kumamoto City arrested a 60-year-old man accused of repeatedly pouring a $1.35 latte into a cup for a $0.70 coffee. The Japan Times reported.
