A 19-year-old baseball player from Harrisburg has died after a dugout he was helping to disassemble collapsed. The accident occurred at Seventh and Radnor baseball stadium on Monday afternoon. As friends who became family, we mourn the loss of one of our own, a promising young athlete.” He unconsciously lost his life while helping others enjoy the sport he loved so much. No words can adequately express our suffering.” Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams also issued a statement: “We were saddened to learn of the passing of Angel Mercado-Ocasio. Anytime someone passes away, we lose a little bit of who we are. It hurts even more when it’s one of us. The owners were our son. Harrisburg Cougar proud, A promising and outstanding young athlete. He died helping others around the sport he loved. It is heart wrenching. Angel embraced so many people and now we need to embrace his memory. We ask everyone in the community to pray for his family, friends and teammates, as we go through this difficult time The impossible together. Angel Mercado-Ocasio died late Tuesday at Holy Spirit Hospital from a traumatic brain injury, the Cumberland County coroner said.
Mercado-Ocasio was on the field as part of a community baseball program and was helping take down a dugout that his coach had built without city permission. Part of the bunker fell on him during that process.
Gerardo Diaz, known as the “Coach of Cuba”, claimed responsibility for the incident. He said he was devastated by Mercado Ocasio’s death.
“He just got into college. He only just went to college this year. You don’t know how smart and funny he is… He was,” Diaz said.
The dugout has since been completely removed from the field.
