Kiev says North Korean forces were detected in the Kursk region, Russia’s border with Ukraine

The Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service announced on Thursday that a group of North Korean soldiers had been spotted in the Russian Kursk region, an area on the border with Ukraine that has witnessed ongoing military operations.

Ukraine has repeatedly warned that improved relations between Russia and North Korea could push Pyongyang to take a more direct role in the war in Ukraine.

Russia and North Korea, both pariahs in the West, have forged increasingly cordial relations since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

In June, the two countries signed a historic defense agreement and pledged to use all available means to provide immediate military assistance if the other side was attacked.

North Korea has also faced multiple accusations of supplying Russia with weapons for use in its war in Ukraine – a charge that both countries have denied, despite significant evidence proving such transfers.
