TikTok’s ‘Sandwich King’ reveals the art of sandwich making in new cookbook

Owen Han knows a few things about sandwiches.

The Los Angeles-based TikTok creator, nicknamed the “Sandwich King,” has gained millions of followers and is the author of a new cookbook called “Stacked: The Art of the Perfect Sandwich.”

Speaking to Fox News Digital on Zoom from his hotel room in New York City, Hahn revealed some of the secrets behind his wildly successful TikTok account and gave some interesting tips on how to make the best sandwiches.

Hahn wasn’t looking for a career in sandwich making, he said.

“It happened by accident,” he said. “I’ve always loved sandwiches.”

He said sandwiches are his “ultimate comfort food.”

After prodding and encouragement from his roommate, Hahn said he started posting sandwich content on TikTok. He quickly found success.

The first meal he photographed was making a “chicken bacon and avocado sandwich,” something he never intended to make. He just happens to rely on the ingredients he has on hand.

“It was my first video to exceed a million views,” he said. “So I think it really resonated with people.”

After tasting viral success, Han decided to try again with another video, this time with a ham sandwich.

He said that this video was a “huge success” and received more than 10 million views.

“People have been calling me the ‘sandwich guy’ since the beginning,” Hahn said.

Eventually, there were calls for Hahn to write a cookbook about his sandwiches, something he said wasn’t what he envisioned when he first posted the chicken, bacon, and avocado sandwich on TikTok.

“Stacked” contains sandwich recipes for every occasion and every skill level, from beginners to seasoned professionals in the kitchen.

There’s also a section of dessert sandwiches, which he said “gave him a penchant for sweets.”

Although he’s known on TikTok as the “Sandwich King,” one thing Han said he’s not is a “sandwich expert.”

He told Fox News Digital that his definition of “sandwich” is “very loose.”

“If the ingredients are stackable and the carbohydrate source — that includes cookies, tortillas, wraps and bread, of course — and can be eaten with your hands and sometimes with a fork and knife — that is, in my literal book, a sandwich,” he said.

This includes hot dogs and burritos, as well as tacos and bao.

“I’ll definitely get some comments here and there [from people who say]“This is not a sandwich,” he said.

His “frozen fruit sorbet bars” are, by his standards, also a sandwich.

1. Get good bread

“For me, it’s the most important thing [ingredient] “It has to be the bread,” Hahn said, adding that he goes to “multiple bakeries” to get the perfect loaf for the sandwich he makes.

“For me, bread can make or break a sandwich,” he said. “It’s the foundational staple.”

Switching up the type of bread can “level up your sandwich game,” Hahn said.

2. Know that the order of ingredients is important

“The way it comes together [the sandwich] “It’s very important,” Hahn said. “There’s a whole section in the book” on this topic, he added.

Paying attention to the arrangement of ingredients “gives the sandwich structural integrity,” he said.

“You don’t want ingredients falling out of your sandwich when you go to eat it.”

When making a sandwich, avoid putting wet ingredients on the bread so the sandwich doesn’t become soggy or “overly soggy,” Hahn said.

“No one really wants that, unless you’re doing a French dive or something like that,” he said.

3. Don’t be afraid to break the rules

Han, who is of Chinese and Italian descent, likes to mix things up when it comes to sandwich traditions, he said.

“I like to put my own touch [sandwiches]He said. “So, in my cookbook, I have a cheesesteak that is not so classic where I take inspiration from my heritage.”

For the cheesesteak, Hahn uses “Chinese-inspired beef for the meat,” then tops the sandwich with mozzarella and Italian pickled peppers.
