Hurricane Milton destroyed and damaged countless homes in Florida. One family from Orlando didn’t want to accept this fate.

Orlando – Hurricane “Milton” hit Florida causing severe damage in many places. Millions of people, including a former host from Germany, were earlier called to flee their homes and seek safety. But one family from Orlando didn’t want to leave their home unprotected—and resorted to an unusual method: They simply built their house!

For extra protection from Hurricane Milton: Family cordons off their home with conveyor belts

CNN reporter Brian Abel met with the family before “Milton” hit Florida. In a video posted on YouTube, family man Pedro and his daughter show how he went about his task. Six wide conveyor belts were pulled across the roof and hooks were attached to either side of the house. As the daughter explains, the hooks reached a depth of almost two and a half meters into the ground and were attached to the cement.

Conveyor belts are intended to eventually prevent Hurricane Milton from carrying away the roof. The idea came about 20 years ago, when the family was still living in Puerto Rico and had already experienced severe storms.

Florida family protects house with conveyor belts: Did it survive Hurricane Milton?

In fact: In a video posted by the daughter after the storm, she walks around the undamaged house. However, he emphasizes that the entire neighborhood was not as badly destroyed as other areas. It is therefore unclear whether the tapes would have provided protection even in extreme cases.

In the comments on both videos, many expressed their respect for the family. Although this idea may seem strange at first, it shows the family’s strong will and commitment to protect their home at all costs. One person said he was from Puerto Rico and knew the system from there.

“It never went wrong,” the man writes. “We did it in a tree house we had, and only ‘Hugo’ and ‘George’ survived (Hurricane).” According to him, the idea is not fun, but livelihood. People from Puerto Rico in particular knew how devastating the hurricane was back then. (nz)
