Joker: Folie à Deux continues its downward trajectory after flopping in its opening weekend, with historically low box office numbers in its second week.

A sequel to the 2019 film Joker, which was a huge hit with critics and fans, Joker: Folie à Deux grossed $38 million at the US box office in its opening weekend, which is significantly less than that. Previous forecasts In the range of $50-70 million.

But the film’s second weekend was even worse, earning just $7 million in the United States through 4,102 theaters. The 81% drop is the largest drop in history for a comic book movie, and among the steepest domestic declines for any film.

The record drop for a comic book movie was previously held by The Marvels, which was a box office hit last year and suffered a 78% drop in its second weekend after showing in 4,030 theaters.

Globally, Joker: Folie à Deux has grossed $165 million so far, far from making back its $200 million budget.

By comparison, Joker was made on a third of its sequel’s budget and opened with $96.2 million in the US, grossing $248.4 million worldwide in just one weekend. In total, the film grossed over $1 billion worldwide, becoming the first R-rated film to do so, and remained the highest R-rated film until this year, when it was surpassed by another comic, Deadpool & Wolverine.

Joker was also a hit with critics, winning two Academy Awards from 11 nominations, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.

Phoenix reprises his role in the follow-up, while Lady Gaga joins the cast as Lee Quinzel, based on the character Harley Quinn.

The second part, a musical, was largely dismissed by critics as “boring“and”Amazingly boring“.

Both The Guardian and The Observer’s three-star reviews praised Lady Gaga’s performance, but deemed the film “daunting” and “indulgent”.
