Microsoft is dramatically improving its support for passkeys within Windows 11 soon. Redesigned Windows Hello The trial will allow you to decide how you want to save your passkeys and even sync them with your Microsoft account or store them with 1Password, Bitwarden, or other passkey providers.
A new third-party password and passkey manager API means developers can connect directly to the Windows 11 experience, so you can use the same passkey from your mobile device to authenticate on your PC. It’s now possible in some apps to do this through QR codes and other methods of authentication from a mobile device, but full support from Microsoft means the passkeys experience on Windows is about to get a lot better.
Microsoft is also redesigning the Windows Hello prompt, including the ability to set up syncing passkeys to your Microsoft account or saving them elsewhere. Once you complete the one-time setup process, you can use facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN to authenticate with a passkey across multiple Windows 11 devices.
Windows Insiders will first be able to access these new passkey features “in the coming months,” which means it will take some time for all Windows 11 users to see this new passkey experience. Microsoft plans to share more details about its improved support for passkeys during its Windows Security sessions 2024 conference approval next week.
