Nell Smith, the talented singer and musician who recorded a popular album of Nick Cave covers with The Flaming Lips and who was working on her debut solo album, died Saturday. She was 17 years old.

The Smith family shared the news In a post on her official Instagram account on Monday, she wrote: “It hurts us so much to say that our feisty, talented, unique and beautiful daughter was cruelly taken from us on Saturday night.”

Smith was a big fan of The Flaming Lips and first met the band’s singer Wayne Coyne after her parents took her to their 2018 show in Calgary, according to Sound result.
