The Kansas City Chiefs placed wide receiver Rashie Rice on injured reserve Thursday, sidelining him for at least the next four games.

Rice suffered a knee injury on Sunday when quarterback Patrick Mahomes collided with his knee while Rice, Mahomes and other players were chasing down a Los Angeles Chargers fumble that followed the interception.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid had already ruled Rice out of Monday night’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Kansas City won’t know more about the extent of the injury until next week, Reid said Thursday, adding that Rice was waiting for the swelling in his injured knee to decrease before undergoing further testing.

“We really hope things turn out for the better, but let’s see where things go and leave that to the doctors to see,” Reid said.

“Rashi had an exceptional year. Unfortunately, injuries happen in this league, and life goes on, so we always expected the next players to step up and step up, and it’s no different now. There’s not another Rashi. There’s [are] However, the other players are very, very good, so we’ll be fine.

Rice leads the Chiefs with 24 receptions and 288 receiving yards in four games this season. He’s also tied for the team lead with two receptions.

ESPN’s Adam Teicher contributed to this report.
