In the US, authorities have succeeded in cracking down on a hacker group linked to Russian intelligence. Several Star Blizzard team websites have been shut down.

Microsoft and the US Justice Department have succeeded in cracking down on a Russian hacker group that targeted journalists and non-governmental organizations. In a joint operation by the US Department of Justice, Microsoft took down more than 100 websites belonging to a group operating under the name “Star Blizzard”.

The hackers, active since at least 2017, have already been attributed by Great Britain to the Russian secret service. Microsoft stressed in a blog post that rebuilding infrastructure on this scale would cost hackers time and money.

Phishing emails are in circulation

In recent years, “Star Blizzard” has targeted former Secret Service employees, Russia experts, and Russian citizens in the United States in particular. The group uses customized phishing emails that trick targeted individuals into revealing login details.

In the past, hackers quickly regrouped when parts of their infrastructure were exposed.
