Iran strikes in retaliation for killing allies

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard confirmed the attack. This was in response to Israel killing leading members of Hamas and Hezbollah. The organization has threatened to escalate the attack if Israel retaliates. Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian said his country does not seek war, but will face any threat with determination. According to Iranian state media, 200 missiles were fired for the first time, including several hypersonic missiles.

Israel’s military and secret services have recently significantly weakened Iran’s allies in the region. In late July, the foreign leader of Islamist Hamas was killed in Tehran. Last Friday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, another key ally of Tehran, was killed in Lebanon. Earlier, exploding radio receivers, known as pagers, injured hundreds of Hezbollah officers and killed many others. Since then, it remains unclear how Iran’s military leadership will respond.

On Tuesday, the Israeli military took another step: Israeli ground forces re-entered Lebanon for the first time in nearly two decades.

Biden ordered the launch of an Iranian missile

The US government called the Iranian missile attack on Israel “failed and futile”. “It has already been made clear that this attack will have consequences, and we are now working with Israel on this,” said US Defense Adviser Jack Sullivan.

Hours earlier, the US had said that Iran would soon launch a missile attack on Israel. The White House later said Biden ordered the US military to support Israel in repelling Iranian attacks and shooting down missiles targeting Israel.
