With the release of iOS 18.1 beta 3 to developers today, Apple Intelligence has added a new feature called Clean Up to the Photos app. This feature, as announced at WWDC, can identify and remove distracting options in the background of a photo.

iOS 18.1 adds new Apple Intelligence features

The new Clean Up feature is available in the Photos app when editing a photo. It’s indicated by a new eraser icon in the bottom toolbar. The feature offers intelligent detection and uses multiple machine learning models to detect distractions, find the edges of the unwanted object, and then replace them. The feature can also identify and remove the shadow or reflection of the unwanted object.

The cleaning feature also knows where people are in the photo, so you can avoid accidentally removing or replacing part of a person.

Clean Up can intelligently identify distracting elements in the background of an image, and users can remove these distracting elements with a single tab. Users can also manually zoom in on the image and use their fingers as a retouching brush to remove distracting elements.

Finally, the feature works with any photo in your photo library, not just photos taken on your iPhone.

Clean Up is available in iOS 18.1 beta 3, and is available to developers now. The first time you use this feature, iOS 18.1 will download and “prepare” the necessary templates. It’s also available in the latest betas of iPadOS 18.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.1.

In addition to Clean Up, iOS 18.1 beta 3 also expands Apple’s intelligent notification summaries beyond Messages and Email. Learn more about this change in our full coverage.
