KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chicago Bears defensive end Douglas Coleman III was carried off the field at Arrowhead Stadium on a stretcher Thursday night during a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Coleman was injured early in the third quarter while trying to tackle Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell. Coleman struck Powell’s arm in the head, causing him to fall to the ground.

He was walking without assistance and boarded a flight back to Chicago Friday morning. He was released from the hospital after being evaluated overnight.

It was a chilling scene as players from both teams knelt as medical staff tended to Coleman, pinning him to a board and then placing him on a stretcher and a medical cart. Bears players and coaches came out from the sidelines to support Coleman as he was taken away.

Coach Matt Eberflus said Coleman moved his limbs and gave Bears a thumbs up.

“That was a huge boost for our football team,” Eberflus said of Coleman’s gesture.

Coleman, 26, played in the Canadian Football League in 2022 and 2023. The Bears signed him to a futures contract in January.

Several Bears players suffered injuries in the preseason finale, which they won 34-17.

Offensive lineman Larry Borum suffered a right ankle injury on the second offensive snap and was taken off the field on a cart. Borum will undergo tests on the ankle Friday, Eberflus said.

It was a serious injury in a game without key players because Borom was set to be the Bears’ backup midfielder this season, backing up left midfielder Braxton Jones and right midfielder Darnell Wright. Borom can also play at both guard positions.

Borom, a fifth-round pick in 2021, has started 23 games and played in 39 over the past three seasons with the Bears.

Wide receiver Nsimba Webster also left the field on a cart after suffering a groin injury in the second quarter. Eberflus said running back Ian Wheeler suffered a knee injury.
