When Donald Trump narrowly escaped a fatal assassination attempt in mid-July, his rival in the race for the White House called Joe Biden. Now he’s appearing in front of his supporters for the first time – and is pulling out all the stops to demonize his new rival.

For the first time since his assassination attempt in mid-July, US presidential candidate Donald Trump reappeared on an outdoor stage. The Republican used his speech behind bulletproof glass in the embattled state of North Carolina on Wednesday against his Democratic rival, US Vice President Kamala Harris. The 78-year-old said in the small town of Asheboro that he was “the most radical left-wing person” ever to run for the presidency of the United States.

Trump portrayed that if Harris wins the Nov. 5 presidential election, millions of jobs will “disappear overnight.” “Your life savings will be completely destroyed,” the former president warned his supporters, adding: “If Comrade Kamala wins in November, World War III will almost certainly occur.”

Trump and his running mate JD Vance spoke in front of an open air plane at the Museum of Aviation. Snipers took up positions on the roofs of nearby buildings. A bulletproof glass panel was built around the Speaker’s podium. After the attack in Pennsylvania five weeks ago, the Secret Service advised Trump to avoid public appearances. When a woman in the audience suffered from health problems, he still came out from behind the security screen to check that everything was going well. “A doctor, please. It’s too hot in here,” Trump said midway through his speech. He then left the stage and, to great applause, went up to an audience member and hugged her. A similar scene had played out the previous evening at a Harris campaign rally in Milwaukee. Harris interrupted his speech due to a medical incident in the audience and called a paramedic.

Trump has appeared at about a dozen indoor events since the attack at a campaign rally on July 13. “We will not abandon outdoor rallies,” he told supporters in Pennsylvania in late July. He is currently touring swing states, hotly contested states that could be decisive in the election. He is relying on a different plan for the Democratic convention in Chicago, where his political opponent, Harris, is focused.

Trump Ignores Advisers’ Recommendations

In his speech in Asheboro, Trump also referred to the fact that his advisers and party leaders are advising him to focus more on political content and less on insulting his political opponents. “Should I get personal? ‘My advisers are fired,'” Trump quipped to the audience, who applauded the personal attack.

In typical Trump fashion, his speech was laced with crude insults. Not only US Vice President Harris, President Joe Biden and former President Barack Obama also gained weight. Trump was upset about Obama’s speech the previous evening at the Democratic convention. “He was very mean last night. I try to be nice to people, but it’s a little difficult when they’re talking in person,” Trump complained. Obama had said that Trump had a strange obsession with childish nicknames, crazy conspiracy theories and crowds. One problem for Trump is that Harris — like himself — regularly draws more than 10,000 supporters at campaign events.
