It’s no secret that Balatro, the poker-themed roguelike from developer LocalThunk, is absolutely fantastic, but it’s always great to see critical acclaim reflected in unit sales.

Accordingly, it has now been announced that the game has sold 2 million units since its launch on February 20, 2024. But that’s not all. To celebrate this milestone, a major free update for the game has also been announced and will arrive sometime in 2025.

Naturally, details about what the update will include are scarce at the moment, but the reveal states that it will “bring new ideas and strategies to the game.”

The accompanying GIF also suggests that the upcoming update will be the first of three, but it looks like we may have to wait a long time for the final updates if the first update isn’t scheduled until 2025.

Anyway, we’re super excited. We love Balatro, and gave it a 10/10 rating in our review. We said it “fully delivers on what it sets out to do, providing an accessible, satisfying, and addictive gameplay loop that anyone can understand.”

The game also saw a fair amount of controversy (through no fault of its own) after it was removed from sale across multiple platforms due to a rating change from PEGI. A week or so later, it was re-released with an 18+ rating, which remains in effect to this day.
