Ukraine has been calling for the lifting of restrictions on long-range missiles for months. Now the Children’s Hospital attack gives a new reason. But the West is hesitant.

Berlin/Kiev – After the devastating attack on a children’s hospital in Kiev, Ukraine’s leadership appears to be planning a military response. It’s obvious how this could be – but it’s currently not possible due to Western restrictions. Andriy Yermak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said in an interview that Kiev needs US approval to use long-range tactical missile systems for attacks inside Russia. The weapons are already being used in attacks in Crimea, but Ukraine wants to allow them to be used against targets in other regions.

Demand has now increased following the attack on a children’s hospital in Kiev. It was mostly carried out by Russian rockets. However, US and European officials are divided over whether the Ukraine offensive was premeditated. “If they attacked us and killed our children, it’s crazy to ask why they weren’t allowed to attack this military base,” Zelensky said at NATO’s annual summit in Washington. “If we want to succeed, if we want to succeed, if we want to save and protect our country, we have to remove all restrictions.”

Principal Olaf Scholes It rejected Ukraine’s demand to remove all conditions on the use of Western weapons against Russia. “No one plans to change the current requirements and guidelines – for good reason,” Scholz said at the end of the NATO summit. He stressed that support for Ukraine should be maximum. However, it must be prevented from escalating into a war between Russia and NATO. US President Joe Biden also rejects the widespread use of weapons based on the argument of non-proliferation.

Serious attack in Ukraine war: Children’s hospital badly damaged in rocket attack

On Monday, July 8, the Ukrainian capital and other Ukrainian cities were badly hit by a large-scale air strike by Russian forces. A children’s hospital at Target previously cared for many children with cancer and other serious illnesses. Nearly 200 people were injured in these attacks and many lost their lives. Many children also died.

Zelensky strongly condemned the attacks and underlined the serious damage. He urged the international community to take a clear stand against Russia’s aggression. During a press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine would take retaliatory measures.

Reaction to children’s clinic attack: Ukraine pushes to lift gun restrictions

In May, NATO allies, including Germany and the United States, allowed Ukraine to launch limited strikes on military positions along the Russian border to prevent attacks on Kharkiv. Scholz advocated increased defense efforts at the NATO summit, highlighting the need to strengthen the eastern flank and increase defense spending in the face of an aggressive Russia.

The U.S. allowed Ukraine to use U.S. weapons on Russian territory, but only in the Kharkiv region and barring imminent attacks. The White House made it clear that long-range missiles should not be fired at targets deep inside Russia to avoid escalation. Washington fears that such attacks could provoke Vladimir Putin to become more aggressive. Yermak emphasized that it is more important to give Ukraine room to respond than to take these fears into account. (Jal)
