Israel’s military has announced several hours of daily “tactical pause” in its operations in the southern Gaza Strip. The interruption will remain in effect until further notice and is intended to facilitate further aid deliveries.

The Israeli military announced a daily “tactical pause in military operations” in the southern Gaza Strip until further notice.

The localized break was to be used between 8am and 7pm and large quantities of relief supplies could be delivered, the Armed Forces announced via X and Telegram. It concerns the route from the Kerem Shalom border to Salah al-Din Street and then further north.

The decision was taken after consultations with the United Nations and other organizations.

A dire situation for people

The humanitarian situation in the Palestinian Territory is catastrophic; Aid agencies have been reporting shortages of food and other essentials for months. Thousands of people lack adequate drinking water and food, and scores of children suffer from severe malnutrition.

The World Food Program (WFP) has warned that people in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamic terrorist group, could soon face the same catastrophic famine as those in the north. “The situation in southern Gaza is rapidly deteriorating,” WFP Deputy Director Carl Schau said on Friday after a two-day visit to the region.

A million people were displaced from Rafah

A million people have been displaced from Rafah on the border with Egypt and are crammed into a crowded area along the coast in the summer heat. In northern Gaza, the distribution of relief supplies has improved somewhat, Schaou said. However, the food supply is not guaranteed to be sustainable.

The war in the Middle East was sparked by a major attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, in which the Islamist militants killed 1,194 people and took 251 hostages in the Gaza Strip, according to Israeli figures. In response, Israel launched a massive military operation in the Gaza Strip. According to the Hamas-controlled health ministry, which cannot be independently verified, more than 37,290 people have been killed so far.
