Israel has successfully deployed the Arrow 3 missile defense system for the first time.

This was announced by the Defense Forces (IDF) and the Ministry of Defense. “The Arrow missile intercepted a threat that traveled far from the country of Israel,” military spokesman Daniel Hagari said Thursday evening. “We intercepted a missile fired in our direction.”

According to media reports, the shelling was aimed at Eilat, a city of 50,000 people in the southern tip of the country. The missile was destroyed in the Red Sea. Unconfirmed reports suggest the missile was launched from Yemen. Iran-controlled Houthi militias have previously claimed responsibility for the attack on Israel.

The Arrow 3 was developed by Israel and the United States to intercept surface-to-ground missiles. It is the first anti-ballistic system capable of being deployed at an altitude of 100 kilometers. Together with the David Sling, designed to defend against long- and medium-range missiles and the Iron Dome (short range), the Arrow forms Israel’s air defense system.

In September this year, Germany announced the purchase of the Arrow 3 for the Bundeswehr. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) told BILD at the time: “This is a historic day for both our countries. Arrow 3 is one of the best systems in the world. ”This is the largest arms deal in Israeli history.

The third generation Arrow (in German: Arrow) consists of a command post, radar sensors, four guided missiles each and launchers with external technology. An improved successor is already in the works. All arrow missiles have one thing in common: enemy missiles must be directly hit and destroyed. The Arrow 3 also has a fragmentation warhead so that it can take out a target while passing if needed.
