US prepares billion-dollar aid package for Ukraine

Kyiv has been pushing for months to deliver the tanks — without much success. But now the tide is turning. Germany provides the mortar tank and the US provides the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle. President Volodymyr Zelensky says Kyiv is “getting exactly what it needs right now.”

On Friday, the United States announced the most comprehensive military aid package to Ukraine, worth $3 billion (roughly 2.82 billion euros). The package, which includes 50 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and dozens of other armored vehicles, will help Ukraine “advance and reclaim terrain,” US Deputy Defense Secretary Laura Cooper told reporters.

It’s “the largest collection we’ve ever committed to,” Cooper said. Armed with 500 TOW anti-tank missiles and 250,000 rounds of ammunition for their machine guns, the Bradley armored personnel carriers are considered to be of military importance.

The vehicles will “further improve Ukraine’s ability to conduct complex maneuvers,” said Cooper, who is in charge of Russia and Ukraine at the Pentagon. This is especially true in the south and east of the country – and in almost all weather conditions and on almost any terrain.

Germany also supplies tanks

On Thursday, the United States and Germany announced the delivery of Bradley infantry fighting vehicles to Washington and Marter infantry fighting vehicles to Berlin.

In his evening video message, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the new package from Washington as “swift and strong”. Cave “is needed right now”. With the new package, total U.S. military aid to Ukraine since the start of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022 totals more than $24.2 billion.

German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit had previously said that Germany would deliver around 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Kyiv in the first quarter of this year.

Ukraine has long been pushing for heavy weapons, including main battle tanks, to continue its offensive against Russia. Although the Bradley and Marder are not main battle tanks, they are considered powerful enough to take on Russian tanks.
