5 things to know before the stock market opens on Thursday, October 10

Here are five essential things investors need to know to start the trading day:

1. Waiting and CPI

Stock futures fell on Thursday as investors awaited the latest Consumer Price Index data, which will be released at 830 a.m. ET. Linked futures contracts The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures fell nearly 0.2%. all. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect the September CPI to show a 0.1% month-over-month increase and a 2.3% jump over the previous 12 months. Delta Air Lines says its profits are rising. The Atlanta-based carrier on Thursday issued fourth-quarter guidance for adjusted earnings between $1.60 and $1.85 per share, up from adjusted earnings per share of $1.28 a year earlier. The carrier said confidence was largely due to resilient travel demand and already strong bookings for year-end holidays – despite an expected one-point revenue decline linked to the US presidential election. “We expect to see a little bit of volatility around the election, which is what we saw in the last national election,” CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC’s Leslie Josephs. “I think consumers are going to take some pause when making investment decisions, whether it’s discretionary or other things. I think you’ll hear other industries talking about that as well.”

5. Milton makes landfall

Hurricane Milton The hurricane made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a Category 3 storm late Wednesday. The storm’s maximum sustained winds have since dissipated into Category 1 territory, but officials continue to warn that the system is “extremely dangerous.” In the days leading up to the storm’s impact, millions of Floridians were advised to evacuate, with President Joe Biden calling it “a matter of life and death.” The tornadoes hit south-central Florida hours before the storm reached the coast, and heavy rains made last-minute preparations difficult, with bridges and highways forced to close. Biden said his administration has deployed thousands of federal employees across the Southeast to help with the recovery.
