2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament Results: No. 1 seed Stanford upset by Ole Miss in stunning second round

The second round of the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tournament ended with a bang as No. 8 seed Ole Miss knocked out No. 1 seed Stanford 53-49. The last time the Cardinals missed the Sweet 16 was in 2007. It is only the fifth time since 1994 that a top seed has failed to reach the Sweet 16 in the women’s tournament.

While shocking, Ole Miss’s victory was by no means an accident. The Cardinals failed to grab a single lead, the closest they came when a pair of Cameron Brink free throws tied the game at 49 with 1:16 remaining. Ole Miss would shut out the game 5-0 of its own, though, as Stanford would run down the stretch with three turnovers during the last 23 seconds. The Rebels will now advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007.

Stanford lost despite an exciting performance from Brink, who missed the opening round with a non-COVID illness. A first team AP All-American scored 20 points to go along with 13 rebounds, plus she blocked seven shots and was a frost deterrent all night.

After comfortably beating Norfolk State in the first round, top seed South Carolina faced South Florida in the Round of 32. The Gamecocks let the Bulls hang in the first half, leading by just four after 20 minutes of play. But South Carolina took the lead in the second half, holding South Florida to 18 points as elite defensive teams across the country looked fearless. Zia Cooke led the Gamecocks with 21 points, adding two touchdowns and stealing.

The second seed, the Iowa Hawkeyes, returned to action with a first round victory over No. 15 seed Southeast Louisiana, a game in which Caitlin Clark posted 26 points and 12 assists for a double-double. Iowa’s second-round game was much closer, but the Hawkeyes edged out Georgia 74-66 thanks to Clark scoring six of his 22 points in the last 42 seconds.

No. 3 seed LSU was facing a tough second round challenge at No. 6 seed Michigan, but the Tigers made it look easy as they did in their opening round defeat of Hawaii. First team AP All-American Angel Reese recorded 25 points, four assists, three steals, six blocks and 24 rebounds in a 66-42 win over the Wolverines.
