At least ten people have been killed after a young man shot himself at a supermarket in Buffalo, USA. Police suspect a hate crime. An 18-year-old man has been charged with murder.
In the aftermath of the shooting death of ten people in Buffalo, New York, the FBI is suspected of racist motives. “We are investigating both a hate crime case and a violent racially motivated terrorism case,” Buffalo FBI investigator Stephen Belongia told a news conference.
At least ten people have been killed after an armed white man opened fire on a grocery store. Three people were injured, police said. Of the 13 victims, 11 were black.
The 18-year-old shooter was arrested shortly after the crime. He turned his shotgun on himself when apprehended by a police officer on the porch of the house where the shootings took place. But the authorities were able to thwart him. He was charged with first-degree murder a few hours after the shooting, according to media reports. Videos and photos show a young buffalo wearing a thin white shirt and mask sitting in front of Judge Craig Hannah in court. He is innocent. Judge Hannah asked if she understood the charges, and she replied, “I do.”
“Some evidence” points to racist activity
Investigators say the attacker broke into the Tops Friendly Market, an area inhabited mostly by buffaloes, and broadcast the attack live on the Internet. The video shows a passenger in front of a supermarket getting down with a gun and firing in the parking lot. There he shot and killed the first four victims. Inside the store, he opened fire on other victims.
The man posted a kind of statement on the “Twitch” website, in which he expressed racist comments that prompted him to do what he did. The FBI primarily defines hate crimes in which perpetrators attack victims on the basis of race, ethnicity or religion.
According to police, the attacker was heavily armed. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet. According to initial findings, the shooter acted alone. He faces up to life in prison for murder, according to prosecutors. A murder weapon, a military assault rifle, can be purchased legally in New York.
The culprit is not from the area
The supermarket is located several miles north of the city of Buffalo in a densely populated area. “Why would a white man come here and shoot at a black supermarket?” Asked one of the locals on local television.
